Varicose veins are enlarged and swollen veins that appear in the legs and feet, causing pain and discomfort in some cases. In fact, our veins have one-way valves that help keep the blood flowing to the heart. However, if these valves are damaged, the blood can accumulate in the veins thus causing varicosities. Namely that this pathology is relatively common and mainly affects women (especially during pregnancy), the elderly or those suffering from obesity. For some, varicose veins are only an aesthetic concern. There is, moreover, no evidence of a direct link between the appearance of varicose veins and the discomfort they cause. In reality, veins with a twisted appearance can cause no discomfort, while damaged veins – which are usually less visible – can become extremely painful.
Symptoms and diagnosis
As a general rule, various symptoms contribute to the sensation of pain and discomfort such as:

- The pain in your legs causes irritation during the night and disrupts your sleep
Your GP will be able to diagnose your varicose veins based on these symptoms from a physical examination. It will begin by examining your legs while you are standing to check for signs of swelling. However, if your attending physician deems it necessary, additional tests may be performed. The latter can also refer you to a vascular disease specialist if you have more serious symptoms.
An ointment to treat varicose veins naturally
- The juice of a fresh lemon
- 10 cloves of garlic
- 1 large glass of olive oil
- 20 drops of rosemary essential oil
- ½ glass of aloe vera gel
Start by chopping your garlic cloves and squeezing your lemon to extract the juice. Put these two ingredients in a glass jar, then add the olive oil and mix everything. When you have obtained a homogenous preparation, seal your container tightly and let your remedy macerate for 21 days, keeping it away from light and moisture.
When the 3 weeks have passed, you will spend your preparation in a sieve to extract minced garlic. You will then add the aloe vera gel and the 20 drops of rosemary essential oil.
For the application, simply spread it on the areas where you have varicose veins and cover with a bandage every night before going to sleep. However, although this treatment is very effective, know that it is important that you are patient and diligent in its use to enjoy all its benefits.
Why is this ointment so effective?
Lemon: This citrus fruit is rich in citric acid, which will help prevent blood clotting and therefore help to relieve the appearance of varicose veins.
Garlic: Garlic is a natural anti-inflammatory. It will therefore reduce inflammation, which is one of the main causes of varicose veins. Olive oil: Olive oil will allow the garlic to macerate for 3 weeks and will be used as a base for this ointment to facilitate its application. Its monounsaturated fats can also nourish your skin and improve its grain.
Aloe vera: Natural anti-inflammatory, this gel will also bring you an immediate sensation of freshness that will soothe irritation.
The essential oil of rosemary: This oil will relieve the unpleasant sensation of heavy legs and bring a more pleasant smell to the ointment.
